PARENT EDUCATION Providence wants to educate parents about the philosophy and application of Montessori education. Throughout the year, we will hold parent education nights, lectures and/or forums. The Parent Education Committee works to bring parents and teachers together to help strengthen the collaborative efforts which are currently in place. Grandparents Day has been a Providence tradition for many years. We like to honor the grandparents of our students for all the wonderful things they do. In recent years, Providence has held an Open House in conjunction with Grandparents Day to invite prospective families to visit our school. 2007 Open House/Grandparents Day: Sunday, October 21: 1:00 - 4:00 2007-08 Discussion Groups and Lectures: September 20 - "The Brain Connection" presented by Susanne van Niekerk. Susanne van Niekerk, visiting from South Africa will be presenting information about how our ability to concentrate, listen and learn effectively is dependent on efficiently functioning neurological systems. Inefficiencies in the functioning of one or more of these basic systems compromises our ability to learn and are therefore seen as the root causes of learning difficulties. Many of the system inefficiencies present “symptoms” that can easily be confused with learning disorders such as AD/HD. October 25 - 8 Principles of Montessori. This research is based on the book "Montessori: The Science Behind the Genius" by Angeline Lillard. Presented by Peter and Rosann Larrow of Montessori Opportunities, Inc.
January 16, 2008 - Montessori Mathematics Betty Snider, a dynamic speaker and experienced Montessori teacher described the general Montessori philosophy of teaching math and why it works so well for a child's developing mind. Parents were able to visit classrooms at every level, primary, lower elementary, and upper elementary, and see demonstrations of the Montessori education tools for math. Many math tools follow through all levels, such as the color coding, pie charts, and the cubes in graduated sizes.
February 7, 2008 - Montessori Elementary Education Betty Snider will demonstrate materials and lead a discussion on the benefits of a Montessori Elementary Education.
Additional Parent Education Nights will be scheduled throughout the 2008 school year.
