Providence Montessori

Kentucky native, Jon Carloftis, award-winning garden designer, garden writer, television guest, author, and lecturer, visited Classroom VIII and taught the students how to make terrariums.

Classroom VIII hosted the Toddler Program at a Valentine's Party.  The Sixth Years planned the decorations, activites and food for all to enjoy.

Mrs. Hiler and the toddlers joined the Primary students and listened to the Elementary Holiday Concert.

The students have been hard at work raising money to help bring Green Bean home.  Our foal will be auctioned off by LexArts in January.  Keep sending in your change and watch Green Bean race around our track out front of the school.

Mr. Martin, the teachers, and the students (toddler-6th grade) are hard at work throwing, glazing and firing bowls for our Chili Bowl Supper.  Stop by between 5 and 7pm and have chili in your new chili bowl.

 

Classroom VII and VIII had a once in a life time experience when they attended the WEG (World Equestrian Games) in October at the Kentucky Horse Park.

Remember that Providence Montessori has a foal in Horse Mania. With the cooler weather, this is the perfect time to get out and stroll the Horse Mania event.  Look for Green Bean at one of our local libraries.

Classroom VII made corn bread the old-fashioned way.

Green Bean is done and ready to trot down the Legacy Trail this Fall.  Before Green Bean heads out, he is on the front porch at school.  Stop by and see what a fantastic job the Martins and your children did in making Green Bean come to life.  The students can even point out the part they painted.

Recently we have had the good fortune of purchasing adjoining properties at 1211 and 1215 Texaco Road. The implementation of a campus wide management plan, the first stage being the re-development of the properties, will occur within the next two years.  The outcomes will focus on student safety, improved traffic flow, parking, and ecologically sound practices.  This plan, along with future implementation phases, will allow our school to continue to remain in the forefront of Montessori schools in Lexington and across the nation. John Martin - $3,440. Green Leaves. Educating students of the importance of water conservation, water quality and storm water run-off management. Students will collaborate with art teachers sculpting natural forms, which will be cast in a fountain on campus, representing the constant replenishing of the earth's natural resources through the flow of water.

All the children of Providence are working on a weaving project that will be auctioned off at the Providence ROCKS Event on April 24th.  The weaving is called Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall.

Classroom VII enjoys the snow on the playground by building a life-size snowman.

Imelda Inuca, from Ecuador, shared with the children of Providence the cultural richness of the kichwa people by demonstrating the original art of embroidery created by many kichwa women from different communities in Ecuador. She shared the extraordinary and unique ability to embroider extraordinary images and figures both by hand and by machine. 

Paschal the Rascal from The Lexington Spellbinders entertained the Lower Elementary students with his stories.  The children were spellbound.

Mr. Monarch, a Providence dad, demonstrated his fencing skills for the school.  He brought with him some friends who showed the school their fencing abilities.  The children really enjoyed the demonstration.

Camp Shawano is an experience that Lower Elementary Students look forward to in their third year.  The children spend the night with their teachers at the camp.  It is a time of bonding and fun.

The 4th Annual FAAB Bash was held on a beautiful day in September on the Providence School Grounds. Fazoli's catered the food and Fifth Third Bank sponsored the inflatables for the children. Families enjoyed raffles, silent auction, cake walk, face painting and inflatables. A fun time was had by all.

Elementary students at Lexington's Providence Montessori School will join Montessori students across the globe to sing "Light a Candle for Peace" in celebration of the United Nations' International Day of Peace.  The song will be sung continuously on Monday, Sept. 21 by over 65,000 children in 31 countries.  The singing will start in New Zealand and end in the Hawaiian islands.  Providence students in grades 1 - 6 will sing the song for five minutes, beginning at 10:47 a.m.

The United Nations' International Day of Peace - marked every year on Sept. 21 - is a global holiday when individuals, communities, nations and governments highlight efforts to end conflict and promote peace.  Established by U.N. resolution in 1982, "Peace Day" has grown to include millions of people around the world who participate in all kinds of events, large and small.

 

Providence commemorates Peace Day annually.  The teaching of peace is at the center of Providence's curriculum and is present in our primary through upper elementary levels. The peace ceremony is a great opportunity for our children to celebrate what they practice throughout the year.

 

 

 

On Monday, September 21, the Providence Montessori student body (toddler through 6th) participated in the International Day of Peace. Our students joined Montessori students across the globe to sing "Light a Candle for Peace" in celebration of the United Nations' International Day of Peace.  The song was sung continuously by 65,000 children in 35 countries.  The singing began in New Zealand and ended in the Hawaiian Islands.  Due to the rainy weather, the students and staff gathered in the FAAB to celebrate this historic event. School Director, Carol Hiler, read a poem - An Affirmation for Peacefulness and with some of the children's help said

The children of Providence have been using a variety of mediums in art class. Mr. and Mrs. Martin have introduced weaving, Play-Doh, Pointalism painting, monoprints and many other exciting art projects.

Ms. Zachritz, head teacher of Classroom V, gave new students a tour of the Providence grounds on their first day back to school.  The students enjoyed seeing the beautiful butterfly gardens.

Providence art teachers, Sue and John Martin, introduced a new art piece, "Every Leaf Counts" to the school in May. The project was inspired by the Providence tree logo representing growth and individuality. Each elementary student painted a leaf of their choice to place on the canvas. This beautiful piece now hangs in Haley Hall.

Our children participated in the Children for Peace activity Saturday by creating poems, essays and drawings based on the statement "A Peaceful World will include....." We had many beautiful entries which were displayed at the Peace Fair. Sophia Voskuhl's art work "Singing for Peace" won for the youngest age level. Julia Radhakrishnan's essay won for the lower elementary age level. And Lindsey Diggin's poem won for upper elementary. Congratulations Sophia, Julia and Lindsey!

Our O Ambassadors, led by Ms. Zachritz, spent the day sharing stories of children from third world countries and selling items which our students have been making. Thank you Ms. Zachritz and all the children and parents who participated in the Peace Fair.
