OUTDOOR CLASSROOM

Butterfly/Native Plant Garden

It is our desire to foster the child's innate desire to experience nature.  We provide a specimen garden so that children can:

·        Develop an attitude of stewardship for the earth.

·        Nurture a respect for all living things.

·        Experience the interconnectedness of all living things.

·        Learn the value of collaborative effort.

Inception

The butterfly garden was created in the fall of 1997 as an addition of a new classroom was nearing completion.  Seeing the ground tilled gave us the vision of a possible garden site.  After conducting a site inventory, considering topography, soil conditions and water drainage, we concluded that all conditions were satisfactory.

We then went to work by first contacting the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife to obtain a Backyard Habitat Kit.  We were certified in this program and received not only valuable information but approximately $200.00 in plants.  Along with $260.00 from the school’s general expense fund, we were off to a great start.  With this money we purchased mulch and additional native seeds and plants.

Junior Master Gardner Program

Providence is pleased to offer a Junior Master Gardner Program (JMG) to our elementary third year students. The program serves to enhance our already rich botany curriculum. It is designed for children in grades 3-5 and furthers the child's exposure to the wonders of nature.

The JMG program incorporates both group and individual activities. The students from the three lower elementary classrooms meet once a week to participate in activities and discussion. Each child receives a handbook and are encouraged to take the handbooks home to read chapters and pursue individual activities.

One component of this program is for children to become JMG certified. To obtain certification a child must complete three activities from each chapter of the handbook and 8 hours of community service activities. Community service ideas include working in the Providence gardens, the UK Arboretum, church or neighborhoods. Upon completion of these requirements, Junior Master Gardners receive a certificate and tee shirt at their third-year graduation. This is an exciting opportunity for our children!
